Your 90 day improvement plan

Day 1 to 10

– Watch or listen to at least 3 people who you think are good presenters.

– As you watch the presentations, take notes on what the presenters are doing or not doing that makes them good

Day 11 to 20

  • Prepare a short (3-5 min) presentation and present to a blank room. Make an audio or video recording of the presentation. Present on a topic you know fairly well.
  • Review the presentation and write down 5 things you do in the presentation are good( think about 1000 things you read) and 5 things that need improvement
  • Pick 2 things from the list of five things that need improvement. Decide exactly what you are going to do to improve them

Days 21 to 30

– Implement the 2 things from days 11-20. Record you short presentation and evaluate. Did you improve? If not try again until you feel that the two things are improved

  • Pick 2 more things from the list of five things that need improvement. Decide exactly what you are going to do to improve them

Days 31 to 40

  • Implement the 2 new things, but also include the original two things
  • Record you short presentation and evaluate. Did you improve? If not try again until you feel that the two things are improved

Days 41 to 50

  • Take the last thing and decide what you are going to do to improve it. Combine with other four. Implement all 5
  • Record you short presentation and evaluate. Did you improve? If not try again until you feel that all 5 things are improved

Days 51 to 60

  • Create new presentation from start to finish. Pick a topic that you care about . This can be real presentation you will gibe in 30 days, a presentation you gave in the past that you think could be improved, or a made-up situation, audience, and topic
  • Do Step 1 task1
  • DO Step 1 task 2
  • DO step 1 task 3

Days 61 to 70

Do step 2

Days 71 to 80

  • DO step 3
  • Practice your presentation over and over. Especially practice the opening

Days 81 to 90

  • Give the presentation – if not to a real audience, than do it on your own and record it
  • Evaluate the presentation. If others attended, get feedback from them. Be specific about what you did well and what can be improved. Make specific notes about what has improved
  • Pick another 5 things that you want to improve. Write them down.

That’s it. It’s iterative. The process of improving as presenter never ends. But you are now a better presenter than you were 90 days ago.
